2, Descriptions
Phase change material are talented for solution of thermal management, they using their possessed energy storage skill to distributor heat or cold energy by intelligently.
Ice bricks would be the first substance that come to our mind when we having concept of PCMs, ice getting melted when temperature higher than 0 Celsius/32F,and it absorbs heat from nearby environment, thus become water as liquid state, conversely the water solidify to become Ice by release the stored heat energy when temperature drop to below 0 Celsius/32F,but Ice/Water have fatal problem of limitation of melting/Freezing point, phase transition only happen at 0 Celsius, and then water-based gels produced with salt agent added, for example the predominant ingredients of sodium polyacrylate,yet the additional with salt changes the crystal structure of ice and reduces the effectiveness by reducing the latent heat. mostly for the temperature point below 0 Celsius, and gels could not keep at a nearly constant phase change temperature during transition when demanded temperature above 0 Celsius, all water-based PCMs including Ice,Ice pack,Gel pack, Dry Ice packs carrying the same or similar characteristics.
When we evaluate the performance of a phase change material, we have criterions, basically a PCMs have bellow the properties:-
They possess the desired phase change temperature
Enough phase change thermal energy
Stable performance, can be used repeatedly
Low volume expansion or contraction during phase transition
Good thermal conductivity, fast phase change
Good reversibility of phase change
